2010 is Hell’s
Belles Tenth year of celebrating Ac/Dc live and with a furious
passion. Lisa B, Adrian “Angus” Conner, Jamie Nova, Mandy
Reed-Leinenweber, and Laura D want everyone with the same
devotion for Ac/Dc to revel in the amazing prowess of one of rock’s
greatest all time offerings. If you’ve seen Hell’s Belles, we
can’t wait to see you again. If you haven’t, there’s no time
like now.
Early 2000, 2 fiery
and talented women musicians created Hell’s Belles. The
architects of the band we know and love today, Om Johari and Amy
Stolzenbach. Inspired by their mutual devotion to Ac/Dc and their
commitment to leveling the rock and roll gender playing field,
assembled an all female group of equally talented and like minded
female musicians to play Ac/Dc anywhere and everywhere people
wanted them to. And thus began a long and fascinating story of
highs and lows, thrills and agonies, beauty and artistry, and at
all times, Ac/Dc. Please enjoy our compilation of shows, events,
and rare images illustrating Hell’s Belles career to date, and
please come out and enjoy the ride with us... |

Reed-Leinenweber - I was sitting on my
couch, early 2001, having just quit a band I played with for 7
years. I remember I was watching a special on Judy Garland, half
interested, and half wondering what the hell I was going to do, when
the phone rang. I answered, and it was Om Johari on the line. She
said that Hell's Belles was looking for a bass player, and they
needed someone before the next show scheduled in Seattle, which was
in two weeks... and she wasn't going to take no for an answer. I
remember being excited, scared, hopeful and extremely nervous all at
the same time. The concept of an all female AC/DC tribute was the
most awesome idea I've ever heard of.. so it was a done deal for me.
For those of you who don't know, at the time Hell's Belles had just
started with Heather Moritz on bass, and they were doing a west
coast tour at the time of the phone call. So that gave me one week
to learn the songs on my own with the records, and the following
week to rehearse with the band.
While learning the songs, it helped a bit that I grew up
loving AC/DC, but of course, you have to listen with a different
ear. It doesn't matter if you're familiar with the material, it's
still tough to cram all that information in your head in such a
short time. It just so happened, that my first show coming up in the
band, was the debut of playing the whole Back In Black record live,
followed by an encore of around seven songs added to that. I had a
day job, so I could only practice in the evenings, and practice I
did. I played until my fingers were raw, and I literally fell asleep
with the bass in my hands one night. When the Belles returned home,
it was time to rehearse with the band. So i would work all day, hop
a ferry to Seattle and practice at night, and turn around and do it
again.
By the time the weekend came it was time for the show, and I
didn't feel ready... but at that point the only choice was sink or
swim. It was at the Showbox in Seattle, and it was sold out by
10:00, and I was terrified. I had to turn my set list into a cheat
sheet. Stars meant I come in after the intro. Hearts meant I start
with the band... you get the picture. Miraculously, I made through
the show. It took me about four songs into it to finally stop
shaking. Once I relaxed a little, it was easier to keep my brain
focused on each song, and really soak in the caliber of how it feels
to share the music of AC/DC to a sold out crowd. It's unexplainable.
It's that very thing, that keeps me doing it. We are extremely
privileged to be able to travel far and wide, meeting and rockin'
with AC/DC fans who feel the same way we do... and even converting
some along the way. We see how timeless the music is every time we
play a show, and it's still absolutely amazing... ten years and
running.
Adrian
“Angus” Conner -
When Hell's Belles started tribute acts were unheard of.
Hell's Belles was an immediate HIT in the Seattle area,
selling out the Showbox within it's first year. In 2001 Hell's
Belles was still extremely popular, not only being one of the
first all female tribute acts BUT being one of the FIRST
tribute band ideas. It didn't take long for word to spread to
Canada and California. I joined Hell's Belles in Sept 2001. I
tried out for the Malcolm part and went on one of largest van
tours Hell's Belles has accomplished, from Seattle to Canada
to Arizona to California.
We kicked off the tour
opening for RATT at Hayden Lake ID. The word was that is was a
big skin head place. Anyways, I'm staring at the 21 song set I
had two weeks to learn and still can't remember which songs I
start. I remember there was an opening act before us and they
were these young guys from LA. They wanted to tour with Ratt
so bad that they drove their pick up truck with a U haul
trailer all over the west coast. They weren't getting paid.
Word has it, they drove right behind the Ratt tour bus the
whole time. I doubt that was real though. We did three shows
with Ratt and on the last night we all went on their tour bus
to meet them. At the time, Steven Pearcy was busy racing cars
and John Corabi was their lead singer. He was a cool No
bullshit kind of guy. If you remember, he also sang with
Motley Crue for a short stint. Warren D Martini (lead guitar)
was very gentle and nice. He wanted us to show him "For
Those About to Rock." How very sweet to ask and make us
feel included in the rock world.
In, Jan 2002 I was asked to
start rehearsing the Angus part as Amy had left the band.
There were a lot of doubts from many close friends of the
band. But by my first gig, I was well on my way to the
greatest opportunity presented to me in my musical career, a
chance to impersonate one of rock's greatest performers. It
was really exciting to be able to quit my day job and be able
to join Hell's Belles. It's been a lot of hard work and
heartache over these years. But that's what you endure when
you love to play music. You put up with just about any kind of
disrespect you can withstand just to be a part of the music.
I'm very proud to be representing one of the greatest rock 'n
roll bands of all time. They've never won a grammy. They've
never had a #1 Hit. But you cannot deny AC/DC wrote some of
the best rock 'n roll music to this day. Time has only proven
this point. I'm proud to be converting people into fans of
AC/DC and honoring and celebrating their music to their most
loyal devotees. Thank you. Good Night. |

Lisa
B - I actually
was asked to join Hell's Belles twice. The first time, (in 2000)
Amy Stolzenbach called me up and told me she and another woman
were staring an all female AC/DC tribute band and would I be
interested in playing the part of Malcolm Young? I knew Amy
because our bands would play shows together in Seattle. My first
reaction was "Hell yeah! That would be bad-ass!", but
my fear took over and I said no. I had my own band and a 2 1/2
year old daughter at the time and it just seemed like too much
to add. Plus, I was certain that no one, least of all me, could
do Malcolm Young, much less AC/DC, the justice that they
deserved as one of the best rock bands of all times. I was and
still am such a HUGE Malcolm Young fan that I was just too
afraid I'd botch the job. Then I went and saw Hell's Belles play
at the Showbox in Seattle and as I watched I stood their kicking
myself for not saying yes. They were incredible! The talent and
energy coming from this band was outrageous! People in the
audience were freaking out!
My chance to "do it over" came about a year and 1/2
later when Om asked me if I wanted to join the band (In April
2002). (The line up had changed up. Amy had left to pursue other
interests and Adrian had transformed into Angus) and the part of
Malcolm was again available. I didn't make the same mistake
twice. This time I said yes! Adrian was and still is amazing and
Om was definitely a force to be reckoned with. I was terrified
to embark on this new musical adventure with these people I had
never met and being sure that I couldn't measure up to the
remarkable talent of all the players in Hell's Belles. None the
less, I jumped into a 15 passenger van and left on what would be
the start of a month long tour and a the beginning of my 8 years
in this band.
The first stop on that tour and my first show was in May of
2002. We played in Bellingham at the Fairhaven Martini Bar. I
sat in a storage closet at the club, violently practicing and
trying to remember all the songs before we played. The only song
I didn't know very well yet was Thunderstruck and Om promised we
wouldn't play it until I knew it better. When we were going on
for our encore someone in the band asked what song we were going
to do. Om turned around and looked at us from the side of the
stage, and before she sprinted out there to finish the show she
said "Thunderstruck". I think I cried after the show
that night. I moved to Bellingham a year later so I've made
peace with my traumatic "first show". Since then (we’ve
kept changing it up), played in amazing places all around the
world, and even met AC/DC! I could have never imagined this life
for myself, but it's been fantastic and I'm so glad I had that
second chance to say yes. These are amazing women that I have
the privilege of playing with and I get to play songs written by
one of the best rock bands of all time; songs I've been
listening to since I was 10 years old! I still get on stage some
nights thinking that there is no way I'm going to be able to
pull it off, but then the music starts and the audience is
pumped and we are pumped and it all just falls into place. My
favorite thing is knowing that I get to help turn new listeners
on to the brilliance of AC/DC and that I get to share what long
time listeners already know; that AC/DC is just about as good as
rock 'n roll gets! |

Jamie
Nova - I joined Hell's Belles in March of
2005. The Belles took a chance on a no name, small town ranch
girl from South Dakota. I had been living in CO the first time I
ever saw them. I had thought to myself, "Ah, a bunch of
girls playing AC/DC? We will see..", HA! They blew my mind!
A few months later Adrian Conner and her original band, “Adrian
and the Sickness”, came through Denver and we played a few
shows together. Some time passed and I heard that Om Johari was
retiring and that they were looking for a new singer. I got the
phone call that they wanted me to audition for the role and I
nearly lost my mind!
Mandy sent me a list around 15
songs to learn in a matter of weeks. I auditioned later that
month while I was on tour selling merch for “Adrian and The
Sickness”, and then had a performance audition a month
later... I remember Mandy telling me on the way to the airport
that I had received the position! I was honored to take the job,
not only would I be singing for a living, which is what I had
dreamed about since I was a little girl, but I would also be
able to learn about the music industry and I would have 4
"sisters" to teach me everything they knew and to help
me sharpen my skills.
I have become the performer I
am today simply because of the ladies of Hell's Belles, their
rearing, patience and encouragement. They taught me everything I
know. I am honored to play the role of Bon Scott and Brian
Johnson and am so thankful for Hell's Belles. |

| Hell’s Belles is
Ten years old in 2010. And, it’s very hard to illustrate how
much Hell’s Belles have accomplished and how far they’ve
come in the name of Ac/Dc, not to mention the forward movement
establishing women as musical equals. It’s ever increasingly
rare that the fans are amazed by these five “Women”, yet, it’s
almost always the fans are blown away by the truth and finesse
these 5 musicians present Ac/Dc, night after night, city to
city, tiny bar to grand theatre. It’s Ac/Dc, pure and strong,
and Hell’s Belles made their mark as women, and are holding
strong via pitch perfect performances with passion.
